Tharparkar

Tube Well Initiative

Tube Well Installation

With poor infrastructure, population explosion, severe climate, and high illiteracy rate, it is no surprise that the inhabitants of Tharparkar face extreme hardships. The Tharparkar district, located in the province of Sindh, Pakistan covers an area of roughly 22,000 square kilometers. It has one of the lowest Human Development Index of all the districts in Sindh-with a population of roughly 1.65 million people. The population lives in about 2,000 villages (or settlements) in the region. Access to clean water is one of the biggest challenges of the area. Being inland and surrounded mostly by desert land, groundwater is the main water source there. However, groundwater is known to have a high concentration of various salts and minerals, which are dangerous for both humans and livestock alike.

One successful sustainable source of groundwater in the region has been tube well. Thanks to our generous donors we were able to successfully install two tube wells in two villages in the region. Villagers now spend ten minutes obtaining the necessary water they need in, lieu of the prior four to five hours (daily) . Due to the extreme climate in the area, the residents of Tharparkar have a diet that is reliant strictly upon rain-fall; consisting mostly of lentils and vegetables that require little to no water. After our gift to the people of this village- they are able to have a constant and reliable source of food.

Water is a basic necessity that everyone should have access to.
